This simulation illustrates the operation of a Micrometer. It runs in two modes: learning and practicing. The pupil can compare his reading with that of the computer in order to check that he has read it correctly.
A Micrometer is used to measure the external dimensions of objects which are about 3 cm or smaller. It looks a little like a G Clamp, but should never be used like one.
The object to be measured should be placed in the gap between the anvil and the spindle. At the opposite end there is a little ratchet with which the thimble should be rotated. The ratchet ensures that the thread is not over-tightened.
The sleeve has a ruler engraved on it which reads to the nearest half millimetre. The thimble also has a 'circular ruler' engraved on it. This reads to the nearest 1/100th of a millimetre.
