19.5 Vernier Callipers Basic

This simulation illustrates the operation of a Vernier Calliper. It runs in two modes: learning and practicing. The pupil can compare his reading with that of the computer in order to check that he has read it correctly.

This instrument is called Vernier callipers (yes plural - like scissors). It is used to measure the dimensions of objects up to 15 cm in length.

The clever bit is the little scale that slides along. Its divisions are 9/10ths of the size of the main scale, look carefully to convince yourself.

To measure something:

1 - Count along the red (main) scale until you reach the first line of the yellow (sliding scale). That gives you the integer number of millimetres.

2 - Count along the yellow (sliding) scale starting ZERO, one, two... until you find the line that best lines up with the line on the red scale.

The number of the yellow (sliding) line that best lines up is the number of 1/10ths of millimetres.

Real Vernier callipers can be used to measure external and internal diameters and flats, and also the depth of holes too.
