If you demonstrate these reactions it is important that your calcium sample is fresh. Old samples are often oxidised and do not react well. Strontium and barium are hard to cut and difficult to ignite. The sequence of reactivity is not obvious.

Materials:

Magnesium ribbon 2 cm lengths (3) Calcium metal granules (1 g)
Gas jar containing oxygen Full range indicator
