Heat of Combustion of Alcohols
I have produced some spreadsheets to calculate the amount of energy released in the combustion of alcohols.
First look over the spreadsheets and figure out how they work:
The Enthalpy of Combustion of Alcohols
The Enthalpy of Combustion of Ethanol
The Enthalpy of Combustion of Ethane
The bond enthalpy data is obtained from the data booklets here:
A-Level Data Booklet.pdf
IB Data Booklet.pdf
Alter the first spreadsheet to produce a calculator for the enthalpy change of the combustion of the carboxylic acids. HOW?
- find the general formula of the carboxylic acids (note: each carboxylic acid differs by the addition of CH2, if you're unsure look it up)
- find the bond energies of the reactants and products
- make a layout like the spreadsheets above
Mr Wilson has a possible solution spreadsheet available ask him….
