Teacher and technician notes 4.7f

Alternative weak acids can be used in this experiment. With such a small mass being measured out a balance of accuracy of at least ± 0.001 g is preferable. An accurate pH meter is required to get a result which bears some resemblance to the accepted value. However, even if poor results are obtained it provides a very useful opportunity to discuss the logarithmic nature of the pH scale and the sources of error.

Materials:

Glacial ethanoic acid (1 drop)
100 cm3 beaker 100 cm3 volumetric flask
pH meter (calibrated) Balance with accuracy of at least ± 0.01 g
