The salt bridge can be prepared by soaking strips of filter paper in saturated potassium nitrate solution.

The Ecell value obtained will be small. This gives an opportunity to correct a misconception that many students have. They tend to assume that with a small value there will be very little product, not remembering that even at 0V the reaction will be half complete.

Materials:

1M copper(II) sulfate (50 cm3) 0.1 M iodine in KI (50 cm3)
0.1 M Fe2+/Fe3+ mixture Copper metal electrode
Platinum electrodes (2) Salt bridges
1% starch solution 1% potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) solution
0.1 M iron(III) chloride 0.1 M potassium iodide
