Teacher and technician notes 5.3.1h

This is a nice experiment to do. The students should be fairly competent with titration techniques by now, and they can compare their answer with the value given on the iron tablet bottle. This involves some good moles calculations and a consideration of errors.

The crushing of the iron tablets usually creates some entertainment as they have a habit of flying out of the mortar. This should lead to a discussion of the importance of not losing any of the iron tablet, by putting solution coated glass rods down on the bench for example.

If the tablets are not sufficiently well ground (apart from not releasing all the iron) the pipette tip will tend to get blocked by the small pieces of tablet.

Materials:

Iron tablets (2) 1 M sulfuric acid (100 cm3)
0.002 M potassium manganate (VII) (100 cm3)
Mortar and pestle 100 cm3 volumetric flask
50 cm3 burette Dropping pipette
100 cm3 conical flask (2) 10 cm3 pipette
Pipette filler White tile
Glass rod Funnel
