It is worth stressing to students that the quantities stated in the worksheet are accurate, Some individuals find it very difficult to limit the amount of methylbenzene or methoxybenzene to a few drops.

The principal idea in this experiment is to compare the reactions of an apparently polyunsaturated molecule with the reactions of the alkenes which were met in Unit 1.

Materials:

Methylbenzene (2 cm3) Methoxybenzene (2 cm3)
0.01 M potassium manganate(VII) (1 cm3) 1 M sulfuric acid (1 cm3)
2% bromine in inert solvent (2 cm3) Concentrated sulfuric acid (2 cm3)
2-chloro-2-methylpropane (1 cm3) Concentrated nitric acid (1 cm3)
Aluminium chloride (0.5 cm3)
