This is the term given to rain which has been made acidic by dissolved, pollutant gases. Sulfur dioxide is the major cause of acid rain, and is produced in large quantities by the burning of fossil fuels, particularly in coal-fired power stations. Volcanoes are a natural source of this gas. Oxides of nitrogen found in car exhaust also contribute to acid rain. |
The low pH of the rain which dissolves these gases in the atmosphere has a devastating effect on wildlife, causing the death of fish and trees. It also considerably accelerates the erosion of buildings.
