Addition reactions
These are reactions in which two or more molecules add together to make one. Alkenes generally react by addition, the double bond breaks open and parts of the other molecule are added to both ends of the double bond:

In the case of an alkene, the molecule which is to add on to the double bond is attracted to the high electron density in the double bond. Such molecules are known as electrophiles (electron lovers), and this type of reaction is called electrophilic addition. The reaction of bromine with ethene is an example of an electrophilic addition reaction:
