Amine complexes with copper(II) sulfate

The light blue precipitate is copper(II) hydroxide, formed by the reaction between the copper(II) ions and the hydroxide ions present in the alkaline amine solutions:

Cu2+(aq) + 2OH-(aq) Cu(OH)2(s)

The complexes with the ammonia and the butylamine are similar royal blue colours. The complex with the arylamine, ethyl 4-aminobenzoate is light green:

The formation of blue and green complexes by amines on adding copper(II) sulfate solution can be used as a test for amines.
