Ammonia solution hazard data

Ammonia solution is also known as ammonium hydroxide. It is commonly met as a dilute 1 M bench solution or as a concentrated solution (880 ammonia). Ammonia gas is released by the solution - this is toxic and extremely irritating to eyes and lungs. The pressure of this gas can build up in bottles of the concentrated solution so care should be taken when opening the bottle. It is extremely damaging if swallowed - seek medical attention. Wear eye protection. Avoid breathing vapour. Use a fume cupboard with the concentrated solution.

Irritant hazard warning Solutions of concentration between 3 M and 6 M are labelled IRRITANT
Corrosive hazard warning Solutions of concentration greater than 6 M are labelled CORROSIVE
Dangerous to the environment hazard warning Solutions stronger than 14 M are very toxic to aquatic life

Dangerous with: Chlorine, bromine, iodine and silver salts. Explosive compounds can be formed.

Disposal: Small quantities can be washed down the drain, diluting well with water.
