Base

This is defined by the Brønsted-Lowry theory as a proton acceptor. They react with acids according to the following equation:

Acid + base salt + water

Typical bases are metal oxides and metal hydroxide, for example copper(II) oxide and zinc hydroxide:

Zn(OH)2(s) + 2HCl(aq) ZnCl2(aq) + 2H2O(l)

If the base is soluble in water it is known as an alkali, for example sodium hydroxide.
