We start with ammonia, NH3. If one hydrogen atom has been replaced we have a primary amine, RNH2. If the R group is an alkyl group we have an aliphatic amine. If the N is directly attached to a benzene ring we have an arylamine. |

With all three hydrogen atoms replaced we have a tertiary amine. |

It is also possible to have four alkyl groups attached to the nitrogen atom by using a dative bond from the nitrogen atom. This gives the nitrogen atom a positive charge, and we have a quaternary ammonium salt. |
