Composition terms

We have seen that solution concentration is measured in mol dm-3. However, you may occasionally come across these alternative methods of expressing solution concentrations:

w/v stands for weight/volume. A 10% w/v sucrose solution would contain 10 g of sucrose in 100 cm3 of solution.

v/v stands for volume/volume. A 10% v/v ethanol solution would contain 10 cm3 of ethanol in 100 cm3 of solution.

w/w stands for weight/weight. This can be used for mixtures other than solutions. A 0.5% w/w cetrimide cream contains 0.5 g of cetrimide in 100 g of cream:
