Cork borer

A cork borer is a tool which is used to bore holes in corks (surprise!). We do not often use corks in apparatus, so it is more likely to be used to make the holes in rubber bungs. Cork borers come in sets of different diameters. The ends are fairly sharp for cutting purposes, so care has to be taken in use.

This tool is also used to fit glass tubing through rubber bungs. It is dangerous to try and force glass through a tight hole. The trick is to push a cork borer through the hole in the rubber bung. The diameter of the cork borer needs to be slightly bigger than the diameter of the glass tubing. Then the glass tubing can be slipped into the cork borer and the cork borer is carefully withdrawn to leave the glass tubing in place.
