Gas syringe

A precision ground glass syringe which is gas tight. It is marked with volumes and is used to measure the volume of a gas. The most common size is 100 cm³. Because they need to be accurately made they are very expensive - try not to break them! The plunger can quite easily drop out of the body, and if by miscalculation you attempt to put too much gas into the syringe the plunger can fly out! Also check that the plunger is free to move. Sometimes the plunger can stick in the barrel, leading to poor volume measurement.

You may find a glass jacket around the syringe. This allows steam to be passed through heating up the contents of the syringe. This can be used in the determination of molecular mass.
