Ice bath

This is just a beaker containing a mixture of ice and water for cooling. It may be used as the final stage of cooling in a recrystallization. Good preparation helps here. Ice on its own does not have a good thermal contact with the object being cooled. It is much better to have some water with the ice. Crushed ice works faster than big lumps. Mix your ice and water before you are ready to use it and the water will have time to cool down. Don't overfill your ice bath or it will spill when you place the object to be cooled in it.
