Iodine hazard data

Solid iodine and the solution of iodine in potassium iodide solution (it is not very soluble in water) are met quite often. The solid has a corrosive action on the skin, and both solid and solution will stain the skin brown. Stains can be removed with sodium thiosulfate solution. Iodine rapidly corrodes metals (including balance pans!). The purple vapour is harmful by inhalation. Wear eye protection. Wear disposable gloves if handling the solid. Avoid generating vapour in the open lab.

Crystals of iodine

Harmful hazard warning

The solid and solutions over 1 M are HARMFUL by inhalation and by contact with the skin

Dangerous with: Potassium, sodium, aluminium, magnesium, zinc. Violent reactions occur.

Ammonia. Explosive nitrogen triiodide is formed.

Disposal: Reduce to iodide using sodium thiosulfate solution. Dilute with water and pour down drain.
