Former names: Methyl alcohol, wood alcohol. Methanol is toxic by inhalation, if swallowed and by skin contact. Wear eye protection and disposable gloves. Wash spills off skin with cold water. If heating, use an electric heating mantle or water bath to reduce the risk of fire and use a fume cupboard to prevent inhalation of fumes. |

Dangerous with: Bromine, oxidizing agents (particularly nitric acid), silver nitrate, platinum, potassium. Violent reactions can occur or methanol may spontaneously ignite.
Disposal: Small quantities can be washed down the drain, diluting well with water.
