You will probably not meet this on your exam, but it should explain some of the odd names you have seen. The name of a complex ion is made up of four parts. The first part indicates the number of ligands, usually di = 2, tetra = 4 and hexa = 6. This is followed by the name of the ligand(s) and then the central metal ion. Finally, the oxidation number of the metal ion is stated in its usual format.
This is slightly complicated if the overall charge on the ion is negative, when the name of the metal ion always ends -ATE. This may simply involve adding the letters to the end of the metal name or the first part of the metal name (usually decided by what "sounds right"). For example, nickelate, cobaltate, vanadate, manganate, chromate. However, if the element symbol is based on the Latin some more interesting names arise.
