In order to make sense of these you first need to understand the principles of oxidation and reduction. An oxidizing agent is a substance which causes the oxidation of another material by removing electrons from it. This means that the oxidizing agent gains electrons and is therefore reduced. There are a number of oxidizing agents that you may meet during your course. They include acidified potassium manganate(VII) solution, acidified sodium dichromate(VI) solution, hydrogen peroxide, concentrated sulfuric acid, concentrated nitric acid, potassium nitrate, potassium chlorate(V) and iron(III) ions. |

Similarly a reducing agent causes the reduction of another substance by donating electrons to it. By the same logic, the reducing agents loses electrons and is therefore oxidized. All the metals, sulfur dioxide, sodium thiosulfate and iodide ions are some commonly met reducing agents.
