Parallax errors

Parallax is defined as the apparent change in position of an object when not viewed on a line. The diagram shows the effect this can have on a burette reading. When we get down on a line with the meniscus we measure the correct reading (shown in green). When viewed from above, through the thickness of the glass, the incorrect reading appears to be higher (shown in red).
