Pauling scale of electronegativity
This is the commonly used scale of electronegativity. It gives a measure of the strength of attraction an atom has for the pair of electrons in a covalent bond. Fluorine is the most electronegative atom on the Periodic Table, and is given a value of 4.0. As a general rule, atoms closer to fluorine on the Periodic Table will be more electronegative than those further away. The following values are for the most commonly encountered elements met in "A" level organic chemistry. You do NOT have to learn them!
