Phosphoric acid hazard data

This acid causes burns. Wear eye protection. With concentrated acid, wear gloves. If diluting the concentrated acid, always add the acid to the water, not the other way around.

Solutions of concentration between 0.5 M and 2.5 M are labelled IRRITANT

Corrosive hazard warning

Solutions of concentration greater than 2.5 M are labelled CORROSIVE

Dangerous with: Water. Exothermic dilution takes place. Always add the acid to water cautiously - not the other way around.

Hydrochloric acid, chlorides. Hydrogen chloride gas is released. Similar reactions occur with hydrobromic acid, bromides, hydroiodic acid and iodides to give hydrogen bromide and hydrogen iodide gases respectively.

Sodium, potassium and other metals. Violent reactions can occur.

Potassium manganate(VII), chlorates. An explosion can occur.

Disposal: Dilute solutions can be washed down the drain, diluting well with water. Concentrated solutions should be neutralized with sodium carbonate before dilution and washing away.
