The solution is often used to test for acids with the effervescence of carbon dioxide indicating the presence of an acid. The solutions are weakly alkaline and irritating to the eyes and skin. The solid is also irritating to the respiratory system. Wear eye protection. Rinse off well with cold water following contact with skin. Avoid raising solid dust.
