Spatula

There are various designs of spatula used for transferring solids. They are not used for stirring with - use a glass rod. A steady hand is needed. Beginners often spill solid from the spatula. Not only is this wasteful, but it contaminates balances and bench surfaces with potentially hazardous chemicals. It is also a good way to lose credit during practical assessment. A simple technique to reduce the chances of spillage is to reduce the transfer distance. For example, if you are weighing out some solid into a weighing boat bring the reagent bottle close to the weighing boat before you attempt any transfer.
