Sulfuric acid hazard data

Both concentrated and dilute solutions of sulfuric acid are commonly used in the "A" Level laboratory. More concentrated solutions cause severe burns. Wear eye protection. Disposable gloves may be used with the concentrated acid.

Solutions of concentration between 0.5 M and 1.5 M are labelled IRRITANT

Corrosive hazard warning

Solutions of concentration greater than 1.5 M are labelled CORROSIVE

Dangerous with: Water. Exothermic dilution takes place. Always add the acid to water cautiously - not the other way around.

Hydrochloric acid, chlorides. Hydrogen chloride gas given off.

Manganate(VII), chlorates. Explosive products are formed.

Sodium, potassium and other metals. A vigorous or violent reaction can take place.

Disposal: Dilute solutions can be washed down the drain, diluting well with water. More concentrated solutions should be neutralized with sodium carbonate before dilution and washing away.
