It is always worth checking the ammonia solution immediately before the practical to see that it does take about 50 cm3 to neutralize 25 cm3 of the sulfuric acid.

Impurities in the iron produce a fairly unpleasant smell on reaction with the sulfuric acid. This is best done in the fume cupboard. Failing this, some good ventilation will make things more breathable.

Materials:

2M sulfuric acid (55 cm3) 2 M ammonia solution (75 cm3)
Iron filings (0.6 g)
250 cm3 conical flask Tripod and gauze
Bunsen burner Heat proof mat
Cotton wool 100 cm3 beaker
Glass rod Red litmus paper
400 cm3 beaker Filter funnel and paper
100 cm3 conical flask Petri dish
Spatula 25 cm3/50 cm3 measuring cylinders
Balance with accuracy of at least ± 0.01 g
