Teacher and technician notes (1.4fi)

This is a relatively simple experiment which can give quite good results. It is an excellent introduction to the study of errors. Students at this stage in the course often have no idea regarding the reliability of their results and we often see answers like - 153.619 kJ mol-1 with the students confident of its accuracy. It is helpful to have all the students put their results on the board so that they can see the range of answers obtained. This leads into a useful discussion as to what has caused the variation and an appreciation regarding the likely accuracy of the final result.

Materials:

0.2M copper(II) sulfate (25 cm3) 1.0M citric acid (25 cm3)
Zinc powder (1 g) Sodium hydrogencarbonate (8 g)
Polystyrene cup and lid Thermometer with accuracy of at least ± 0.5 °C
25 cm3 measuring cylinder
