It can be difficult to get a steady flame in this experiment. It often extinguishes as a result of limited air flow. It can help to lift the calorimeter slightly clear of the base using some splints to allow more air flow. If you do not have the calorimeters shown you could just use the burner to heat up a beaker of water using a draught shield to limit loss of heat.
