The key to success here is to have some fresh calcium oxide. My first attempt used a very old sample which I tried to revive by heating strongly in a crucible for thirty minutes. It gave a result which was only half the value of the fresh value. The final result was still a bit short of the accepted value, but this should lead to some good discussion of errors. It seems likely that heat loss in the calcium oxide experiment and the calcium oxide purity are the major problems here.

Materials:

2M hydrochloric acid (50 cm3) Calcium carbonate (2 g)
Calcium oxide (1 g)
Polystyrene cup and lid Thermometer with accuracy of at least ± 0.5 °C
25 cm3 measuring cylinder Balance with accuracy of at least ± 0.01 g
