Teacher and technician notes (1.7.3)

It is worth having a small sample of cyclohexene in the fume cupboard for combustion. This prevents contamination of the stock bottle by dirty combustion spoons. It is also helpful to stress to students the quantity of cyclohexene required for the reactions, pointing out the difference between a pure liquid and a solution. Many students find it difficult to only add a drop or two of cyclohexene to a much larger quantity of reagent.

Materials:

Cyclohexene (5 cm3) in boiling tube for whole group Cyclohexene ( a few drops)
Bromine water (5 cm3) 1 M sulfuric acid (5 cm3)
0.02 M potassium manganate(VII) (few drops) Methyl 2-methylpropenoate (5 cm3)
Di(dodecanoyl) peroxide (0.1 g)
Combustion spoon Bunsen burner
Heat proof mat Beaker 400 cm3
Test tube Test tube rack
Tripod and gauze Splint
10 cm3 measuring cylinder Access to fume cupboard
