Teacher and technician notes (2.10.1c)

We pre-cut the sodium metal into appropriate sized pieces and provide a beaker of ethanol for disposal of any remaining sodium.

The oxidation reactions only need a few drops of the alcohol added to a dilute acidified solution of sodium dichromate(VI). It is worth stressing the quantities as students tend to use much more than is needed.

Materials:

Methanol (10 cm3) Ethanol (10 cm3)

Sodium metal fresh pre-cut pieces 2mm cube (4) Phosphorus(V) chloride (1 g)
1M sulfuric acid (20 cm3) 0.1M sodium dichromate(VI) (1 cm3)
8M ammonia solution (bottle)
