It is worth checking your alcohols before the experiment. They often appear to be acidic probably as a result of atmospheric oxidation. Washing with sodium carbonate solution and water should solve this problem. Stress to students that they should be looking at the colour of the indicator in the aqueous layer in the case of immiscible alcohols.
