Cleaning of the flame test wires is a difficult and time-consuming process. It is better to provide students with separate, labeled flame test wires for each of the samples used. If you only put a small quantity of metal chloride into each of the sample bottles it will tend to restrict usage in the class and means that they can be replaced if contaminated (quite common!). It is also worth stressing that the sample and flame test wire need to be kept together. It will make it much easier to see the flame colours if the laboratory can be darkened.
