Teacher and technician notes (2.9)

This is a very fiddly demonstration to carry out in front of a class and it may be easier simply to rely on the video. There is no video of the effect of an increase in pressure as the nitrogen dioxide tends to escape quite readily under pressure.

For the brave who want to go for a live demonstration I've included an apparatus list and specimen risk assessment:

Materials:

Lead(II) nitrate [dried and powdered] (20 g) Ice
Salt (30 g)
Boiling tube Side arm test tube
Glass rod Hoffman clip
Glass bends and bungs (see photo below) Rubber tubing
100cm3/600 cm3/2000 cm3 beakers 100 cm3 gas syringe
T-piece Burette taps
Access to working fume cupboard
