Testing for a carboxylic acid

Effervescence with sodium carbonate solution - evidence of a carboxylic acid

Here we rely on the fact that a carboxylic acid is acidic! Carboxylic acids are usually weak acids with a typical pH of around 3. We could test with a pH meter, but usually we add sodium carbonate solution and look for effervescence. This is not proof of a carboxylic acid, but evidence of acidity. Be careful to exclude any other acid.

2CH3COOH(aq) + Na2CO3(aq) 2CH3COONa(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)
