Titration answer 5

15.0 cm3 of iron(II) sulfate solution was titrated with 0.0200 M potassium manganate(VII) solution . The titres were 8.70 cm3, 8.70 cm3 and 8.80 cm3.

What indicator is used in this titration?

What is the concentration of the iron(II) sulfate solution?

No indicator is required as the reaction is self-indicating.

Average titre = (8.70 + 8.70 + 8.80)/3 = 8.73 cm3

Number of moles of KMnO4 = 8.73/1000 × 0.0200

MnO4-(aq) + 8H+(aq) + 5Fe2+(aq) Mn2+(aq) + 5Fe3+(aq) + 4H2O(l)

5Fe2+ º MnO4-

\number of moles of Fe2+ in 15.0 cm3 = 5 × 8.73/1000 × 0.0200

Volume of FeSO4 solution = 15.0/1000 = 0.0150 dm3

\concentration of FeSO4 = (5 × 8.73/1000 × 0.0200)/0.0150 = 0.058 mol dm-3
