A water bath containing an ultrasound generator. Ultrasound is very high frequency sound, beyond the range of human hearing (you'll still know when the bath is on, though!). An ultrasonic bath is very useful for a number of purposes. It will clear small air bubbles from a volumetric flask. It is effective at cleaning items (particularly jewellery!), and can unstick jammed glassware. |
There is a branch of chemistry called sonochemistry which investigates the use of sound to affect chemical reactions (compare photochemistry which uses light).
