Watch glass

This piece of apparatus is the same as the glass face of an old watch - which is where the name comes from. Larger ones are called clock glasses for the same reason.

They have a large open area, so are useful for adding a small amount of solution to check for crystallization. For the same reason they make a good container to place a solid in a desiccator - the large surface area encourages drying.
