Iron & copper(II) reaction conclusion

Mass of dry filter paper = 0.829 g

Mass of dry filter paper and copper = 1.476 g

\Mass of copper = 1.476 - 0.829 = 0.647 g

1.

Fe(s) + Cu2+(aq) ® Fe2+(aq) + Cu(s)

2.

2Fe(s) + 3Cu2+(aq) 2Fe3+(aq) + 3Cu(s)

Reaction 1 would produce 0.01 mol of copper = 0.635 g

Reaction 2 would produce 0.015 mol of copper = 0.953 g

From this we can conclude that reaction 1 was the reaction which took place. Propanone is quite often used in the laboratory in order to obtain dry equipment or materials. It is much more volatile than water, and so quickly evaporates leaving the material dry.
