Both these methods can give good results. It is worth spending enough time to ensure that students fully understand the methods before starting the experiments. Method 1 has quite a lot of instructions and it is not uncommon for some of them to be ignored!

Materials (method 1):

0.02 M iodine in KI (50 cm3) 1 M propanone (25 cm3)
1 M sulfuric acid (25 cm3) 0.5 M sodium hydrogencarbonate (50 cm3)
0.010 M sodium thiosulfate (200 cm3) Starch indicator
250 cm3 conical flasks (2) 100 cm3 conical flasks (2)
50 cm3 burette 10 cm3 pipette
50 cm3 measuring cylinder Funnel
White tile Pipette filler
Stop clock

Materials (method 2):

0.01 M iodine in KI (15 cm3) 2 M propanone (30 cm3)
2 M hydrochloric acid (75 cm3)
Test tubes (4) 100 cm3 conical flasks (4)
50 cm3 burette (3) White tile
