Materials:
| Glacial ethanoic acid (5 cm3) | 0.1 M ethanoic acid (10 cm3) |

| 0.1 M sodium hydroxide (15 cm3) | 0.1 M sodium ethanoate (100 cm3- for all) |
| Phosphorus pentachloride (0.2 g) | 8 M ammonia (100 cm3- for all) |
| Ethanol (3 cm3) | Pentan-2-ol (1 cm3) |
| Phenylmethanol (1 cm3) | Propan-1-ol (1 cm3) |
