The production of the esters is always very popular with students, although some imagination may be needed to match the smell with the one stated!

Materials:

Glacial ethanoic acid (5 cm3) 0.1 M ethanoic acid (10 cm3)
0.5 M sodium carbonate (20 cm3) Concentrated sulfuric acid (0.5 cm3)
0.1 M sodium hydroxide (15 cm3) 0.1 M sodium ethanoate (100 cm3- for all)
Phosphorus pentachloride (0.2 g) 8 M ammonia (100 cm3- for all)
Ethanol (3 cm3) Pentan-2-ol (1 cm3)
Phenylmethanol (1 cm3) Propan-1-ol (1 cm3)
Full range indicator (a few drops)
Test tubes (4) Boiling tube
100 cm3 beaker (3) 400 cm3 beaker
10 cm3 measuring cylinder Dropping pipettes
Balance with accuracy of at least ± 0.1 g pH meter
