This is best done as a demonstration. The reaction with water can be a little tame, which the students can find disappointing especially when they have read that it reacts "violently" with water. The reaction can be enlivened by warming the water. However, it is a useful to compare this reaction with a typical organic reaction, like the ester production that has just been done, to realise that even with the cold water the reaction is quite lively.

Adding the ester mixture to some sodium carbonate solution should clear the smell of ethanoic acid and hydrogen chloride, allowing the ester to be smelt by the students.

Materials:

Ethanoyl chloride (3 cm3) Ethanol (1 cm3)
0.5 M sodium carbonate (10 cm3) 8 M ammonia (2 cm3)
100 cm3 beaker (3) Dropping pipettes
