Barium chloride hazard data

Dilute solutions of barium chloride are often present in the lab as it is used to test for sulfates. It is toxic by ingestion. Inhalation of the solid dust is harmful. Wear eye protection. If using the solid, avoid raising dust.

Barium chloride bottle

Harmful hazard warning

Solutions of concentration equal to or greater than 0.1 M but less than 1 M are labelled HARMFUL

Toxic hazard warning

The solid and solutions of concentration equal to or greater than 1 M are labelled TOXIC

Dangerous with: No common problems.

Disposal: Add sodium sulfate solution to precipitate barium sulfate. This can be filtered off and placed in the normal refuse. Barium sulfate presents minimal hazards as it is insoluble.
