Dipole moment table

The following values for dipole moments are given in Debyes. This table has fairly good agreement with the results from the experiment in which the following deflections were noted:

Substance Dipole moment Jet deflection

Carbon dioxide

0

Cyclohexane

0

Negligible

Dichloromethane

1.54

5 - 8 mm

Ethanol

1.69

11 - 14 mm

Hexane

0

Negligible

Propanone

2.95

22 - 23 mm

Water

1.84

18 - 24 mm

You may be worried that the agreement is not perfect, but then this experiment was not a particularly well-controlled one. Try to think what factors, other than the dipole moment of the molecule, would affect the degree of deflection of the liquid stream. You can check your conclusions here.
