In this experiment we investigate the degree of polarization in various molecules. Put more simply, we are looking to see whether the molecule has a positive and a negative end. Even non-polar molecules are attracted to a charged rod. This is due to a process known as induction. You can demonstrate this by picking up some small, uncharged pieces of paper on a plastic pen that you have charged by rubbing it on your jumper. However, those molecules that have a permanent dipole are much more strongly attracted towards a charged rod. This can be seen from the degree of deflection of the liquid stream from a burette when a charged rod is brought close to it.

Having watched the video try to place the molecules in order of increasing dipole moment, and then check your answers in the dipole moment table.
