1 The electrical conductivity of solutions
In this experiment an electrical circuit is set up using a small lamp to indicate the current flowing. The circuit is completed, in turn, with a variety of 0.1 M solutions. Watch the video and make a note of the brightness of the lamp in each case. The brighter the lamp, the higher is the conductivity of the solution involved. The idea behind this experiment is to demonstrate that some substances contain charged particles called ions. We illustrate this by making use of the fact that opposite charges attract and using a compound which contain coloured ions. We hope to see the coloured ions attracted towards an oppositely charged electrode. The negative MnO4- ion is responsible for the colour. The purple colour should head towards the positive electrode in the experiment.
