Teacher and technician notes (1.6.1a)

A nice demonstration to set up is a U-tube containing a copper(II) sulfate jelly. Details can be found in the Nuffield Fourth Edition Teachers' Guide. An alternative is to use copper(II) chromate where both ions are coloured.

Materials:

0.1M hydrochloric acid (10 cm3) 0.1M sodium hydroxide (10 cm3)
0.1M sodium chloride (10 cm3) 0.1M magnesium sulphate (10 cm3)
0.1M aluminium nitrate (10 cm3) Potassium manganate(VII)
Low tension a.c./d.c. power supply 2.5V/3.5V torch bulb and holder
Crocodile clips and leads Electrolysis cells with graphite electrodes
Microscope slide Filter paper strip
Forceps
